Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
The woman came to draw water, but met with the water of life yet couldn’t recognise Him. What is this gift of God? Do you possess this gfit? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). The gift of God is eternal life through Christ. All human beings are sinners separated from God. This separation has created a void in our lives and many people are immersed in many things which doesn’t give life all in a search for fulfilment and to fill that void. The Samaritan woman we are told was an adulterous woman. She has lived with five men already. That points to the fact that she was seeking to find fulfilment in these numerous illicit relationships. She was seeking to quench a thirst in her soul.
Simply, she was a sinner in need of salvation. Now, towards the end of their conversation, after Jesus has lovingly revealed her sinfulness to her, He also revealed Himself to her as the Messiah who “will save his people from their sins.”(Matthew 1:21). “Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”(John 4:26).
Like the Samaritan woman, you may have immersed yourself in an unfulfilling lifestyle all in an effort to dull an aching dissatisfaction in your heart. Stop. Look to Christ. He offers eternal life and will redeem you from the sins which offers no fulfilment. “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again” (John 4:14).
