His Banner Over Us Is Love

He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love (Songs of Solomon 2:4 ESV)

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us…”, “In love he predestined us for adoption…”, “What shall separate us from the love of God”. God has shared his love abroad in our hearts. These are just but a few of numerous testimonies of God’s love in Scripture. And God Himself testifies that He has loved us with an eternal love. Nothing, “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Paul says in Romans 8:39.

God’s love is great love. He has bestowed on us—unworthy sinners–the privilege and honour of adoption into the divine family by sending Jesus to die for us. He has made us sons and daugthers of His kingdom by grace through faith in Christ.

If you know nothing of God’s love, you are spiritually famished. God is the fountain from which love flows. He is love. If you have not experienced the love of God, you stand outside of God’s banqueting house. You know nothing of the peace of God. You have not tasted of His goodness and mercies. You can’t say and mean it, that the Lord is good and His mercies endureth forever. You can’t say the Lord is your Shepherd, I shall not want.

The believer  however is one on whom God has bestowed His love. Though once a sinner separated from God, he is now reconciled to God and has entered God’s banqueting house; a place of love, peace, joy and life. David testified that in God’s presence there is fullness of joy and pleasures at His right hand forever (Psalm 16:11).

We who were once no people and cut off from God are now the people of God. He has lifted a banner of love over our heads. He says through the pen of Peter that ” ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ( 1Peter 2:9 KJV). He has lifted a banner of love over us out of His bountiful love and brought us into sweet fellowship “so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7).

Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
All thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart — Charles Wesley.
